GENMAX supplies mattress border machines for producing the side panel — the vertical band that joins the top and bottom panels and gives the finished mattress its height, edge support and shelf appearance. Border production runs as its own sub-line inside a mattress factory, and getting it right removes one of the most common sources of rework at final assembly.

Why Border Production Is Its Own Operation

The border is the part of the mattress a retail buyer touches first and the part a hotel purchaser inspects for wear. It carries the brand label, the handles, the ventilation grommets and usually a quilted or ultrasonic pattern — several operations on one long, narrow piece of fabric.

Plants that handle borders on general-purpose sewing equipment run into the same two problems. Border length has to match the mattress perimeter within a tight tolerance, because a border cut long puckers at the tape edge and a border cut short pulls the panel out of square — and both defects are only discovered at final assembly, after the panel and spring unit have already been committed. The second problem is throughput: borders are consumed at the same rate as mattresses, so any border bottleneck caps the whole plant.

Dedicated border equipment fixes both by holding length automatically and running the sub-line at a rate matched to assembly.

Where Borders Fit in the Line

Border production sits between panel and final assembly. The panel is quilted, the border is built here, and the two are joined at the tape edge station. Borders can also be quilted ultrasonically — thread-free, no bobbin changes — using an ultrasonic quilting machine set to border width.

What border heights can be produced?

Standard mattress border heights through to high-profile and pillow-top constructions. Height is a setting rather than a tooling change, so a plant running 20 cm and 35 cm models switches between them without downtime.

Can the machine handle gusseted borders?

Yes. Gusset panels are attached as part of the border assembly sequence, which is how pillow-top and euro-top constructions are built.

How is border length matched to mattress size?

Length is measured and cut automatically against the programmed mattress dimension, rather than marked by the operator. This is what removes the pucker-and-pull defects that show up at the tape edge station.

What fabrics are supported?

Knit jersey, damask, quilted composite and non-woven backing in the weights used for mattress covers. Tell us your fabric specification and we confirm feed and tension settings before shipment.

Do I need dedicated border equipment for low volumes?
